  • 10.41 pm: Three hours and 20 minutes after an official tsunami warning center, followed later by a major international earthquake center, put out word that a major earthquake had struck Pakistan, the Associated Press is issuing a so-called "APNewsAlert" (breaking news bulletin). It reads: "Official says a 6.1 earthquake has shaken southwestern Pakistan, no word on damage." Note that major news agencies were already reporting deaths and major damage.
  • 10.46 pm: Five minutes after its initial alert, a second APNewsAlert follows, with some more accurate details: "A local official says 16 have been killed in a strong earthquake in Southwest Pakistan".
  • As the evening continued, the death toll continued to rise and it became clear many people had lost their lives in this earthquake. While, in the end, international media led in bringing details of the destruction, they failed to report it as soon as possible. After BNO News (who brought the earthquake report within a minute after it was released by an earthquake center), Reuters did a good job in bringing the news. The Associated Press had a major failure as it took them 3 hours and 20 minutes to alert its members to a significant earthquake which in the end killed up hundreds.
